The council are proposing to spend €150 million developing the vacant 'Opera Site' in the city centre. However their plans are for 5 star office blocks, with not a single apartment.
We are in the middle of a housing crisis, with a real shortage of affordable, quality accomodation in the city centre. We need this site developed as a vibrant place to live, work and socialise - not another dead zone after 6pm.
There is a growing campaign for a #LiveableLimerick, however this must also be an #AffordableLimerick. Building quality social and affordable accomodation for people to rent or buy as part of this development would be an important first step.
What you can do
It's not too late. Ultimately, this will come down to a vote of the 21 city councillors, most likely in October. So we have until Monday October 16th to campaign for the city councillors to support the proposal to include accommodation when they vote on the plans at that council meeting. Contact your local councillors and urge them to support these proposals.
